Lakers Split Two Matches On GLIAC Tourney Opening Day

Midland, Mich. - The Mercyhurst men's tennis team split two matches during the first day of the GLIAC Tournament, losing to No. 4 seed Wayne State 5-1 before defeating No. 8 seed Findlay 5-2. The Lakers, seeded No. 5, will play in the fifth-place match Sunday at 9 a.m. Kyle King went 3-0 on the day, pairing up with Ronald Heurich to win a pair of doubles matches. He added an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles against Findlay. In the loss to Wayne State, King and Heurich won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles, but the Lakers trailed 2-1 heading into singles play. The Warriors' Antoine Marenaud and Alejandro Gomez won in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Kevin Turnbull put the match away, coming back from losing the opening set, to defeat Heurich 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. In the second match of the day, King and Heurich again picked up a doubles victory, winning 8-2 at No. 3. Adam Marnik and Mijo Cotic added an 8-4 victory at No. 2 and the Lakers led 2-1 heading into singles play. Mercyhurst had little problem picking up the three wins it needed in singles play as Mateusz Przybysz won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, King won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, and Juan Franco won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6. Mercyhurst is now 7-9 on the year heading into the fifth-place match Sunday. |
