Schonhoff, Perry and Sekulski Named First Team All-America

Dec. 24, 2007

Erie, Pa. - Coming off its most successful season in program history, the Mercyhurst men's water polo team had three athletes earn Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Division II All-America First Team honors. It is the first time that more than one Laker was named to the team in the same season.

Andrew Schonhoff, a first-team pick in 2006 and Mercyhurst's career leader in goals scored, became Mercyhurst's first two-time All-America selection. Joining Schonhoff was the team's leading goal scorer Alex Perry and freshman goalkeeper Andy Sekulski. Sekulski is the first freshman in program history to earn All-America status. Prior to 2007, only Schonhoff in 2006 and Brad Armstrong in 2004 had been named All-America.

In 2007, Schonhoff was named MVP of the Division II/III Eastern Championships, scored 48 goals and tallied 11 assists while leading the team in drawn ejections with 55. He finished the year ranked 33rd among all NCAA schools in goals scored. He was also CWPA All-Southern Division Second Team

Perry, in his first season at Mercyhurst, made an immediate impact, leading the team in goals scored with 53 and recording 20 assists for a team-best 73 points, which set a new school record for points in a season.

Sekulski was just as impressive in his rookie year, leading the team with 176 saves in 66 quarters of action. He finished the year with a saves percentage of .559 and he also chipped in 16 assists.

As a team, the Lakers finished the year with a school record 14 wins and were co-champions of the CWPA Southern Division, Western Region for the second-straight year.
