Heintzman Receives Inaugural GLIAC Commissioner's Award

Bay City, Mich. - Mercyhurst College junior soccer player Rebecca Heintzman was one of 12 fall recipients of the inaugural GLIAC Commissioner's Awards for Academic and Athletic Excellence. The awards, sponsored by Meijer, Incorporated, will be presented to six male and six female athletes after the fall, winter and spring sports seasons. Heintzman is a two-time member of the GLIAC All-Academic Team and is a biology major with a 3.84 grade point average. She is a two-year starting goalkeeper for the Laker women's soccer team and posted nine shutouts in 2007. She had a 1.14 goals against average and was stellar for Mercyhurst in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. She had a shutout in a 1-0 win over No. 22 Quincy and then allowed just one goal against undefeated No. 1 Grand Valley State in a game that ended tied at 1-1 through regulation and two overtimes. Heintzman joined Hillsdale's Melissa Bartlett, Wayne State's Rachelle Malette, Michigan Tech's Amy Palmgren, Grand Valley State's Katy Tafler and Ashland's Lynsey Warren as female recipients. The male recipients were Ashland's Vince Cashdollar, Grand Valley State's Chris Hammer, Hillsdale's Nick Gurica and Mark Nicolet, and Ferris State's Erik Schumacher and Jake Visser.
