Headley Gets 100th Career Win As Lakers Sweep Edinboro

April 30, 2008

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

Edinboro, Pa. - The Mercyhurst softball team came from behind in both games of a doubleheader with Edinboro Wednesday, defeating the Fighting Scots 5-3 and 8-4. With the sweep, Laker head coach Sara Headley picked up the 100th win of her career, becoming the first Mercyhurst softball coach in program history to reach that milestone.

Carrina Crow continued to baffle hitters, going all seven innings in the opener without allowing an earned run. Despite that fact, Mercyhurst errors helped Edinboro score three runs early and the Lakers trailed 3-1 heading into the fifth. Anna Glomb's RBI double in the fifth, the only extra base hit of the game for either team, cut the deficit in half and the Lakers took the lead for good one inning later.

After Erin Ratajczak lined out to first to start the top of the sixth, Jessica McNurlen was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a Megan Houston single. Michelle Schmitz followed with a single to tie the score at 3-3. After Amber Rapose grounded out, Kara Gorgos drove in the winning runs with a two-out base hit.

Crow has now allowed one earned run over her last four starts - all of which were complete games. She gave up five hits and two walks against Edinboro, striking out six batters. Offensively, Mercyhurst got production from its entire lineup, getting seven hits from seven different batters.

In game two, Headley got her 100th career victory as the Lakers fought back from a 3-0 deficit heading into the sixth. The Lakers scored four runs in the top of the sixth and four more in the top of the seventh to roll to the 8-4 win. Brittany Strier got the win in relief and Erica Beidler was the only Laker with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Amber Cervantez drove in three runs with a pinch-hit bases loaded double and Schmitz added a homer and two RBI.

With the wins, Mercyhurst also broke the program record for wins in a season, set last year when the Lakers went 23-23. Mercyhurst improves to 24-28 and Edinboro's season comes to a close at 18-20. The Lakers will play in the GLIAC Tournament as the No. 7 seed beginning Friday at 10 a.m.
