Niagara Proves Too Strong For Lakers

March 9, 2008

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's tennis team opened its spring season Sunday against NCAA Division I Niagara. Although the Lakers were competitive throughout, Niagara was a bit stronger in a 7-2 victory.

Kim Ezzo and Jennifer Daly rolled to an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles to improve to 13-5 as a pair at that spot on the year. Meghan Raynor improved to 12-4 in singles play as well, defeating Niagara's Emma Cunnington 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4.

Although Niagara picked up victories at every other spot, Mercyhurst had opportunities. Ezzo, just a freshman, dropped a first-set tiebreak in her first career match at No. 1 singles, eventually losing 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Jaclyn McLean split the first two sets at No. 3 singles but Niagara's Vanja Lakic pulled out a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 win.

Niagara improves to 3-6 on the season and Mercyhurst falls to 11-7. The Lakers will be back at home Saturday to host Ferris State in a non-conference match at 3:00 p.m.
