Mercyhurst unveiled its new mascot Saturday, March 11, 2006, at the Mercyhurst Ice Center as the men's varsity hockey teamdefeated Canisius 7-2 in an Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinal match. Why the "Lakers?"

With Mercyhurst located in Erie, Pa. and on Lake Erie, the nickname "Lakers" seemed the perfect fit. A "Laker" is a fisherman who has the skill, tenacity, and resourcefulness to meet the challenge of life on the sea.
